About Charles Dickens and Nelson

The neighbourhood team have provided the following description of their work:

The area centres on Landport but takes in small areas which are perhaps related more closely to Somerstown, Fratton, and Buckland.

There are a number of shops, notably along Fratton Road which forms the eastern boundary of the beat, but the area predominantly consists of social housing, mostly in the form of flats. The beat contains some of the most deprived areas in the country in terms of health, literacy, numeracy and employment.

The Buckland and Landport Neighbourhood Management Team have done much to kick-start initiatives in the area. However, in common with the Heartlands group which has evolved from the initial team, they cover only as far south as the railway line, missing almost a third of the beat area, widely regarded as Somerstown.
